Konami Possibly Parting Ways With Kojima After MGSV

GameSpot is reporting that their sources are claiming Kojima will be leaving Konami entirely by December of this year. According to the source, Konami is breaking ties with Kojima Productions and letting go of most lead staff, including Kojima, so they will all leave when Metal Gear Solid V is finished.

The source claims that “power struggles” between Kojima and Konami have lead to all Kojima staff to be on contract basis, instead of having permanant jobs. This has lead to Konami limiting Kojima staff from internet, phones, and other networks. They are also limiting appearances for Kojima and his staff to appear at events and promotions regarding Metal Gear. So I guess we have no viral marketing to look forward to…..

To further enhance the problem, Konami has begun removing Kojima Studios logo from all Metal Gear products including their Twitter and Official Site.

When asked for comment, Konami has stated: “As we have already announced, we are shifting our production structure to a headquarters-controlled system, in order to establish a steadfast operating base capable of responding to the rapid market changes that surround our digital entertainment business. Konami Digital Entertainment (including Mr. Kojima), will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products. Please look forward to future announcements.”

Personally I am a bit curious on what will come of this. If this is true, and it isn’t confirmed yet, it’s obvious that Kojima wanted a bit more for his studio and Konami is saying it has to be their way or nothing. Thus Konami flexes their muscles, now they are just waiting for Kojima to give in and play their game.

Yet while we are all worried on what will happen to Metal Gear, and how bad Konami might milk it to death, that isn’t our only worry. Remember that little teaser for Silent Hills we got a while ago? Well Konami owns rights to it, and if Kojima is leaving the studio then that project might be all but killed. If he leaves and it isn’t killed, well there is no purpose to it.

Then there is the fact Kojima was the sole purpose for Konami turning things around. A good new Castlevania and Metal Gear are just about the only Konami titles I own. Both touched by Kojima, then he plans to create a franchise out of Silent Hill again? Facing facts, Konami has stayed afloat this long simply because of Kojima Productions, so it doesn’t make sense to cut ties with the only profitable branch you have. Well, unless you plan to ride PES out to your death, then go for it.
