I know what some of you are thinking, KOTOR II had so many issues, do we really want Obsidian to do another Star Wars game? Well, I would say it’s time to shut that line of thinking down immediately. First, I don’t blame Obsidian for the faults of KOTOR II. I blame LucasArts putting a massive rush on the development time in order to get the game out within a year. The story was there, had strong elements behind it, but they weren’t given the time to polish it up, or even add in an entirely separate world (as they were going to).
It never felt like the game, or Obsidian for that matter, was given the chance they deserved. So I’m kind of excited to hear that they are currently pitching a new Star Wars game to LucasArts. The news of this comes from Rock,Paper, Shotgun in an interview they did with Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart. He also says that they aren’t setting the game during the same time period, since The Old Republic currently has that area under control:
“There’s a lot of different eras in Star Wars, and that’s what we would focus on…We pitched a between-Episode III and Episode IV game [to LucasArts]. Because we think that timeframe is super interesting. It’s the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi, it’s Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few. So it was an interesting time to set a game, and you know, Chris Avellone came up with a really cool story.”
Apparently it’s something they’ve been working on since before Disney even came into the picture:
“It’s something we’re still hoping for, even with the Disney/Lucas stuff going on…It changes things a lot, but you know, we’re gonna push on it. I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with. We really worked on it hard and distilled it down to these eight or ten pages that really sold the story and characters. Then we sold it off to LucasArts and got a call back later that day. They were like, ‘This seems really cool. We want to talk to you guys, like, tomorrow about it.’
“We haven’t [talked with Disney yet]. We’re kind of waiting for the smoke to clear. But that’s one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again].”
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m really crossing my figners that this happens, and soon. The entire RPG genre seems like a perfect fit for the epic storytelling of Star Wars, and it’s amazed me that we haven’t had more Star Wars RPG games. It’s something I want to see more of, and it sounds as if they’ve got a good idea ready for it.
Whether or not it actually happens is completely up in the air at this point, but the man sounds confident, so I guess we’ll just have to sit back and pray for this to happen. How do you guys feel about it?
