When you think of weapon-based fighting games, the first that may come to mind is the Soulcalibur series.  That’s to be expected since it was a highly marketed game.  However, it wasn’t the first weapon-based fight game.  There was another before it that graced arcades and systems in Japan and the US, known as Samurai Shodown.  Samurai Shodown enjoyed a long series that encompassed over 15 games, the last of which debuted in 2009.

Now, after a 10 year hiatus, SNK and Athlon Games are excited to bring back Samurai Shodown for Playstation 4 and Xbox One this June, with Nintendo Switch and PC versions releasing later.  Enjoy the announcement trailer that sees the returning series use the glorious Unreal Engine.

Samurai Shodown will take place in the 1800s after the events of Samurai Shodown V and prior to the events of the original Samurai Shodown (1993).  Thirteen classic characters will return for Samurai Shodown, including Haohmaru, Earthquake, Nakoruru, and Galford, with more characters coming via post-launch DLC, including 3 new characters to the series.

In developing Samurai Shodown, SNK worked on various features to elevate the game to more than just a 1v1 fighter.  Their work has produced the following features to the game:

  • Story
  • Practice
  • Online Battle
  • Offline Battle Modes.
  • Dojo – an innovative new asynchronous online mode that uses deep machine learning to create a CPU-avatar that learns from players’ actions during offline modes and creates a Ghost AI character.

That last one is pretty interesting, as in the dojo, players will be able to upload their Ghost to the leaderboards and also download Ghost data from other players. Players can take on Ghosts in 1v1 battle, or take on the Ironman Challenge and attempt to take down up to 100 ghosts in one go.

There’s a lot to get excited for with Samurai Shodown returning this June on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.  If you’re headed to Boston for PAX East, you can get your hands on the demo they’ll have, on-site, from March 28 – March 31.  There will even be a panel, moderated by Team Spooky’s Giby and feature SNK’s Yasuyuki Oda (Producer), Nobuyuki Kuroki (Game Director) and the Director of the original Samurai Shodown, Yasushi Adachi, as well as several others from SNK, called Samurai Shodown – Resurrecting a Legend, Saturday, March 30 from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. EDT.

Samurai Shodown arrives on Xbox One and Playstation 4 this June, with Nintendo Switch and PC ports coming later in the year.
