It has taken some time to Muggle-proof this news, but the Ministry of Magic’s confidentiality department has finally finished the spell thanks in large part to the wizards at WB Games and Niantic. A great calamity has befallen the wizarding world. As a member of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, your mission is to join forces with wizards and witches, from around the world, to cast spells and return Foundables trapped by Confoundable magic, such as artefacts, creatures, people, and even memories, all in an effort to keep magic hidden from Muggles.
That, is the premise for WB Games and Niantic‘s latest AR venture, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, a Portkey Games title (label for games inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World). Shortly after the success of Pokemon Go! hit a fever pitch, a few years ago, WB Games and Niantic had announced that they intended to make this game, but didn’t give much indication as to what you’d exactly do in the mobile game, for obvious reasons. Now that they’ve had time to work on and develop Wizards Unite, we finally know what all awaits us later this year.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will work in similar fashion as Pokemon Go!. By opening the app, you can walk around parks, public places, etc. and find Foundables all around you. Encountering them and casting spells will send them back to the wizarding world. Just like Pokemon Go!, famous landmarks will be more likely to appear. By returning Foundables, you’ll receive in-game rewards that can be tracked within the game registry.
Casting these spells will use up Spell Energy, so Niantic has created “Inns”, found in Muggle establishments, to replenish Spell Energy. Furthermore, the game incluses ingredients for the purpose of brewing Potions and replenishing Spell Energy, among other uses. These ingredients can be found on the Map, varying by the environment, weather, and time of day, as well as in specially designated Greenhouses.
Wizards Unite will also contain two major features to look out for, Portmanteaus and Fortresses. Portmanteaus are portkeys that will unlock a 360-degree Advanced AR experience of iconic Wizarding World Locations, like Ollivander’s Wand Shop. Meanwhile Fortresses are Wizarding Challenges that put you in a real-time fight with dangerous foes like Death Eaters and Dementors. It’s said that they will be very dangerous so send an owl for help before you strike.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will release on Android and iOS in 2019. For Android users, the app is available to pre-register on Google Play. Stay tuned for iPhone users.
