Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Blu-Ray)
The Guardians of the Galaxy are back as Vol. 2 lands on blu-ray this week with a bevy of special features that allow you to dive into Marvel's most enjoyable sequel so far. Come inside to check out my thoughts on the new release in my full review.
Due to having a newborn near the start of this year, heading out to the movie theater has been almost non-existent this year. As such, we've missed just about all of the Summer releases this year...except one. Despite it being more difficult, our family made it a priority to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it released. We all loved the first film and find time to watch it semi-regularly (my blu-ray copy is frequently discovered secreted away to my step-daughter's room).
Having only really seen one movie this Summer, we certainly didn't regret making it GOTG 2. The characters are just as endearing as ever, the humor remains solid without feeling forced, and the new story brings a surprisingly emotional punch to the Marvel universe. All in all, it's a great sequel that encapsulates all the made the original great, while pushing the characters/story into new directions.
Personally, I love the film's focus on family and what it means to have one, even if they aren't related by blood. It's a theme that was present in the first movie, but more at the forefront of the story being told. In many ways, despite there being a very real threat for the heroes to combat, Guardians 2 is a much more personal story with a lot to say. It's one of the things that endeared me to the first film, and it's great to see that kind of intimate storytelling continue in the sequel.
Now that it's launching on blu-ray, my family can continue to enjoy the further adventures of the Guardians in excellent quality. If you can't tell by now, I'm completely and fully recommending you pick up this blu-ray. There's no denying that the film alone is well worth the purchase, as you'll get plenty of enjoyment from watching it time and time again. Moreso, the blu-ray transfer is absolutely gorgeous and the unique visuals presented in the film really stand out.
The blacks are deep without crushing, which allows all the colors to pop on the screen, and the image is crystal clear. Each frame of this film feels like a treat for the eyeballs and the transfer ensures it continues to feel that way no matter how many times you see it. The soundtrack is given equal importance on the disc, with great prioritization for dialog without anything else being drowned out.
As is normally the case when it comes to Marvel movies (or just about any Disney related release), the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 blu-ray comes loaded with a whole bunch of special features for fans to check out and enjoy:
Bonus Round: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
In the Director's Chair with James Gunn
Reunion Tour: The Music of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Living Planets and Talking Trees: The Visual Effects of Vol. 2
Showtime: The Cast of Vol. 2
For fans looking to dive further into the filmmaking behind the movie, there are quite a few good featurettes on the disc to check out. James Gunn offers up a thorough look into how he approached the sequel following the first film's success in a four-part feature going into the visual effects, the importance of music, and more.
There's also the full "Guardians Inferno" music video fans got a tease of leading up to the blu-ray release, which features David Hasselhoff...It's interesting to say the least. The deleted scenes show off more adolescent Groot (as seen in one of the film's five mid-credits sequences), another that connects to the final battle from the first film, and a few more. They're pretty neat to see and offer up some additional laughs, but it's easy to see why they ended up on the cutting room floor.
In all, the bonus features offer up quite a bit of extra material for diehard fans to enjoy (though an Infinity War tease would have been awesome). You're getting a good bang for your buck with these bonuses.
An Excellent Home Release for An Excellent Movie
Even if Disney/Marvel shipped a blu-ray that was nothing more than the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie, I'd tell you to go out and buy it. It's a great film that only seems to get better with each viewing. That alone makes it worth the purchase price. Disney didn't stop there, however, and there are plenty of great, and in depth, special features worth checking out as well. There won't be any buyers remorse with this one.
