Official Synopsis
Adonis Johnson never knew his famous father, boxing champion Apollo Creed, who died before Adonis was born. However, boxing is in his blood, so he seeks out Rocky Balboa and asks the retired champ to be his trainer. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis, and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any in the ring. With Rocky's help, Adonis soon gets a title shot, but whether he has the true heart of a fighter remains to be seen.

Creed is an incredibly passionate deep and intense film. It takes what you loved about the original Rocky and brings it back to life. Never settling for anything less than an incredible writing, the story takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of fun, excitement, drama, and even a twist or two of nostalgia. But never so much that it takes away from its own identity. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, and Tony Bellew. It is written, produced, and directed by Ryan Coogler.

I spent all day rewatching the entire Rocky Franchise. Yes, even the dreaded Rocky V with Tommy Gunn. This franchise is one that helped shape my love for film. Growing up with Rocky seeing him become this bigger than life hero, yet always remain the good hearted man he was. His story is one of triumph, and gives us all something to strive for. If you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth! A lesson I have always taken home form the one and only Champ.

Now a new saga begins in the shadow of Rocky. The Story of Creed. The illegitimate son of Rocky’s greatest foe and ally, Apollo Creed. And while this is in fact a Rocky film, it is no longer his story. It is now Creed’s legacy.

It's not very often a film comes a long and can truly suck you in. A film that makes you completely forget you are watching a movie and makes you feel like you are there. And Coogler and his team have done just that. Whether you are sitting with Adonis in a cell, or training alongside of him. This movie takes you for a ride you will not soon forget. The struggles that Adonis goes through to find his heart, to prove to himself that he is worthy of the name that is Creed, you take those steps with him. Coogler has done an incredible job on this script. From the editing bay, to the actors, to the sound mixing, to framing ever single shot perfectly.

I’m going to start with the negatives, because they are few and far between. The love story, while I understand what they were going for was a little on the shaky side. There are a few scenes between Adonis and Bianca (Thompson) that where a little dry and stereotypical. Welp now that I got that out of the way…

Amazing film. The story is so true to the original Rocky. It’s not necessarily a sports film, but a drama with sports in it. You follow Jordan’s character as he struggles to find his heart. This mirrors so perfectly the original film. With Rocky putting on his Mickey hat, and properly this time, you really feel a connection between the two. The chemistry was perfect, no one could have played this role any better than Jordan did. While a few aspects of the love story are little weak, you still feel the chemistry between Bianca and Adonis as well.

All movie long I sat with a grin on my face, and had I not known already, I never would’ve guessed that this was the first Rocky film not to be written by Stallone himself. Coogler who worked with Jordan in 2013’s Fruitvale Station knows how to write to his strengths. And Jordan is at the top of his game because of it. Stallone as well is at his best. When Rocky falls ill, there runs the risk of overuse. However Stallone’s performance, and Cooglers direction and shots use it perfect. Not as a gimmick, not overbearing, but just enough that it pulls on your heartstrings, and gets it point across that is dire situation. There is no beating you over the head with a message, other than in this story, we fight.

Movies were made for the big screen. There is no other feeling like sitting in a packed theater, with sound system on point and everyone going for this ride together. And Creed is no exception to this. Matters a fact, if you only see one film in theaters, go see this. Grant it I have not seen Star Wars yet, the impact of this film in the theater is amazing. The sound mixing alone is worth the trip to the theater. I know I know, movie jargon, but the way they shot this film, you feel as if you are in the ring with Adonis. You hear the sound coming from over your shoulder as Rocky shouts out to him from ringside. Ever hit, every fall, you feel it with you entire body. And by the time it is all said and done, you are sitting on the edge of your seat as if you are watching your favorite sports team or fighter in action.

Creed has by far taken my top spot as best movie of the year. Not only that, but in my opinion, takes the top spot of the franchise. Dare i say best sports film in the past decade. If you have the opportunity to go out and see it, scratch that, make sure you have the opportunity to go see it. This is the perfect film to come out over Thanksgiving weekend, and with any hope, we can move forward and see more of the story of the son of one the greatest boxers the world has ever known.
