We can only hope to see ourselves in equity through separation: on chromacolour paper, on linen canvas, or as sculpted by plasteline… In animation, default behavior and mannerisms stimulate interest and laughs they otherwise wouldn’t. There’s a distancing effect in the format that also brings us closer; something about a representation that can be more objective. It can make "normal" habits look peculiar and our bustling human fuss seem so much clearer — so negligible.

The Red Turtle, a minimalist parable of elemental gradient (i.e pastel sand/rock, foliage, water & fire), sheds the form’s usual adornments in favor of a meatless spine. That spine, pure visual storytelling nude and on display, thrives without its supplements. Save for laconic grunts and fed up releases the film is speechless. Sound and color evoke a rapid passage of time, days are soft shades and nights are monochrome. A stranded man will spend his years on a personified island. That island, this world, has phylogenesis suited to a timeless tale. A red turtle is reincarnated as something else entirely. A symbol of frustration and conflict becomes the symbol of a new life and love. But, then we see, the red turtle has always meant tranquility.  As a symbol of nature it forgives unconditionally and indifferently, or, in other words, retains a divine apathy whether it pardons or destroys.

The red turtle provides love & comfort but is aloof at the incident of death. Death is merely a motion in the cycle. This is why many viewers describe the red turtle smothered in mystery. The penumbra is our unavoidable proclivity to emotionally respond. But this deity has no reason to, and, viewed through a medium of separation it’s easier to ask ourselves: Do we?

  • The Red Turtle is a collaboration between Dutch animator/director Michaël Dudok De Wit and Studio Ghibli
