War for the Planet of the Apes is one of the best swan songs of a trilogy I have seen in a long time. The ride got better and better as we went and the ride is worth going on again.

So it’s confession time. The first movie rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn’t high on my list of movies to watch. I honestly saw it a few weeks for the first time prior to the second one releasing on DVD. I immediately watched the two of them and realized I had been missing out on some good stuff. So now that I had enjoyed this series I had set the bar for what was to be the final installment of the trilogy. It did not disappoint at all. War for the Planet of the Apes is a great movie and one of the best I’ve seen this summer. I mean if you want a simple should you see this movie then yes go see this movie. It’s not so much that this movie is good but it makes the series as a whole good. From start to finish War is well written, the effects properly convey the facial expression in the mo cap, and the story keeps you engaged in the movie. Andy Serkis needs a whole new category for his performance in this film. Please bestow this man awards for his work. As the title suggests this movie is a war movie. It goes into the decisions soldiers and leaders must make on both sides. This had the capability of just being a good movie without the apes being used. But hey that’s the draw factor right? I love the effects and the way they brought uniqueness to the main characters on the ape’s side.

Woody Harrelson’s performance makes you remember how versatile he is as an actor. I don’t want to say he never gets the credit he deserves  but he delivers on earning our admiration and this role is no different. He and Serkis together make for a perfect yin and yang in this movie. It truly shows how humanity has nothing to do with being human. The subplot of this movie sets up for the future that we all know is eventually coming but we see how the end will come. Barring a second viewing for more of an in depth analysis I can truly say this is a movie that should be in your top five for the summer as I told a good friend of mine.

War For The Planet of the Apes Review

This movie makes me want to watch the entirely trilogy all over again and that is saying something. This film sets the bar for trilogy storytelling with a slow burn leading to a blaze. It's a shame the series is over but his was one of the best rides.
