Superhero shows are all over the place these days. well, we're about to get one more ... Kinda. Netflix has ordered a 10-episode season of the one-hour sci-fi, family drama, Raising Dion. The series is based on the short film and comic book by Dennis Liu. Check out the film below.
The series will be about an African American woman, Nicole Reese, who is doing her best to raise her 7-year-old son Dion after the death of her husband, Mark. If it wasn't enough that she just lost her husband and has to now raise her son alone, Dion begins to manifest an array of superpowers. She enlists the help of her late husband's friend, Pat, to help her watch over Dion as she tries to learn the source of his powers and keep his abilities hidden from those that take her son from her and treat him like a lab experiment.
Carol Barbee (Judging Amy, Jerico, Touch) will serve as showrunner/exec producer has written the script for episode one which Liu will direct. joining the duo is Michael B. Jordan as exec producer through his Outlier Society Productions. Jordan will also play the role of Nicole's husband Mark.
Liu had this to say about the project:
“I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I'm excited to partner with Netflix and MACRO, who I know shares that commitment. More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”
