The story of Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead isn't as "over" as some may have thought. Andrew Lincoln will continue playing the character in an upcoming trio of films for AMC. Come inside for the first details!
Much has been made of this season being Andrew Lincoln's final season on The Walking Dead as the story's primary character Rick Grimes. Grimes has been the window into this world in both the comics and show since the beginning, so the idea that he would no longer be on the show was kinda crazy.
Last night marked his final episode, and AMC had been hyping it up...But it turns out, there's still more of his story to be told. If you are still invested in the show and haven't watched last night's episode yet, turn away now as the details get pretty close to spoiler territory.
Still here? Okay. Shortly after the show ended last night, AMC revealed Andrew Lincoln would be reprising the role of Rick Grimes in a trilogy of feature-length Walking Dead films (that will still air on the channel). Not only does this give fans the chance to see more of the character in action, it also delves into AMC's plans to further expand the mythos and lore of the zombie franchise.
Here's the spoiler: Rick didn't die last night as many expected. Instead, he was picked up by a helicopter and carted off...somewhere. The show will keep the focus on the rest of the cast and their trials, but the first Walking Dead film will explain where Grimes was taken and the new challenges he'll face in an all new corner of the zombie apocalypse.
For the first time in a WHILE, fans will get the chance to explore an all new area of the world they've been inhabiting. There's a lot of territory to be explored in that area, as the show has mostly kept things contained to a small section of the country, with contact to the outside world mostly nonexistent. It's a way for AMC to tell a bigger story, while keeping fans attached to the character they started this journey on. Frankly...I'm pretty excited.
To be honest, I stopped watching The Walking Dead a few seasons ago, and it was a hard choice for me to make. I was ADDICTED to this show when it first aired and voraciously read through all of the comics in a very short period of time. Eventually, though, it lost me. There are a number of reasons, but ultimately the great episodes stopped outweighing the boring/meh episodes. I still love the idea/story and the idea of finally moving outward into the wider world has me excited for Walking Dead in a way I haven't been in some time.
The first film is expected to begin filming sometime in 2019, with an airdate still unknown at the time. As mentioned, AMC is looking at this as an expansion of the franchise that they hope to continue down the road. The Walking Dead's cheif content officer Scott Gimple had this to say (via THR) about the upcoming films and future plans:
"The story of Rick will go on in films. Right now, we're working on three but there's flexibility in that. … Over the next several years, we're going to be doing specials, new series are quite a possibility, high-quality digital content and then some content that defies description at the moment. We're going to dig into the past and see old characters. We're going to introduce new characters and new situations."
What do you guys think of seeing Rick Grimes back for The Walking Dead movies? If they do more movies, what characters/stories would you like to see them focus on?
