2013 Summer Movie Preview Guide: May

Hard to believe that we’re on the cusp of yet another Summer movie season, one of the most active and exciting times of movie buffs.  There’s no shortage of blockbuster style films this year, along with several that some have been looking forward to for years.  Let’s kick this guide off with the month of May!

May 3rd

Iron Man 3Iron Man 3 poster

Directed By: Shane Black
Written By: Drew Pearce and Shane Black
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ben Kingsley

Official Synopsis: Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Our Thoughts:  Iron Man 3 kicks off the Summer Season, and we’re all waiting to see how it does.  Not only is it a sequel to a good franchise, it’s the first film in Marvel’s Phase 2 of films, and we’ll get to see how our heroes do in a post-Avengers setting.  Things look good so far, and it’s tracking for a massive release.  While we’re sure it’ll be highly entertaining we can’t say it’ll be much beyond that.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed!

The IcemanTHE-ICEMAN-Poster

Directed By: Ariel Vromen
Written By: Morgan Land, Ariel Vromen
Cast: Michael Shannon, Ray Liota, and James Franco

Official Synopsis: Inspired by actual events, The Iceman follows notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon) from his early days in the mob until his arrest for the murder of more than 100 men. Appearing to be living the American dream as a devoted husband and father; in reality Kuklinski was a ruthless killer-for-hire. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession. Co-starring Academy Award® nominee Winona Ryder (Black Swan) and Chris Evans (Avengers, Captain America), The Iceman is directed by Ariel Vromen (Danika) from a script he wrote with Morgan Land (Rx). Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), David Schwimmer (“Friends”), Robert Davi (“Profiler”) and Danny Abeckaser (Alpha Dog) round out the cast. The film features cameo appearances by Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies) and James Franco (127 Hours).

Our Thoughts:  While it hasn’t received the same amount of publicity as Iron Man 3, everyone should be really excited for this one.  The trailer blew us all away here at Cinelinx, and it looks like a chilling/riveting take on this horrifyingly true story.  Even if you catch something else on this day, don’t neglect this film over the weekend.

Here are some smaller ones also releasing on this day, though be sure to check your local theaters as these aren’t necessarily wide releases:

Caroline and Jackie
Dead Man’s Burden
Desperate Acts of Magic
Greetings From Tim Buckley
Kiss of the Damned
Love Is All You Need
