Christmas Wish List: What Movie Buffs Want

Joe Donnelly

Ferris Bueller Cufflinks. Leisure Rules

Who doesn’t love a day off? A day dedicated to kicking back, relaxing and chilling the hell out. Maybe that’s your routine on Christmas day? Then again, maybe a day off is better spent skipping school, frequenting a ball game, borrowing your friend’s dad’s vintage Ferrari 250 GT California…and then totaling it? Yep, just another day in the life of Ferris Bueller. So with the Mathew Broderick 80s classic in mind, check out these babies; novelty cufflinks which read ‘LEISURE’ and ‘RULES’ – dedicated to the Bueller school of philosophy. You’ll be the coolest guy at the party. Well, maybe not, but we’ll think you’re cool at least. These quirky little numbers can be found at – a UK based memorabilia site which delivers worldwide. I stumbled across this site a few years back and it’s a great stop for stocking fillers. Sha-wing Batta!

Pink elephant

Stuffed Pink Elephant Toy

Thermon: I wished for a purple elephant, but now I want a pink elephant!
Willie: Well, wish in one hand, shit in the other; see which one fills up first.
Thermon: OK.

Put up the tree. Hang the lights. Then the tinsel. And the baubles. Hang the stockings. Wrap the presents. Slide them under the tree. Leave the cookies and milk by the fireplace (or beer if you grew up in Scotland – damn you Dad!). It’s all rituals at Christmas. Most people have their favourite movie too; one they save for the festive season- It’s a Wonderful Life a regular list-topper. For me though, it’s not Christmas until I’ve watched Bad Santa. One of the best comedy’s of all time, far less a festive favourite. This is the quintessential Christmas movie as far as I am concerned, so in its honour, my second wish list item is Thermon Mermon’s toy of choice: a stuffed pink elephant. Feel free to add blood stains for authenticity, however this practice is not necessarily recommended.

1. Lawrence of Arabia 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Blue-Ray Set

James Bond isn’t the only British-related cinema event celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of arguably the most epic movie ever made, Sony Pictures has released a special edition Blu-ray set to honor the cinematic accomplishments of this historic film. As an epic film, it was made to be visually stimulating, and therefore it is fitting that the film finally gets a Blu-ray adaptation to make you actually want to watch a movie in widescreen (how it was meant to be). Furthermore, there are plenty of Lawrence-related accessories to keep you entertained – including the film’s sound track, a photo book, 2 additional discs of special features, and a film roll duplication. For those of us that appreciate real movies, this is as a must have.

2. OPI’s 50th Anniversary James Bond-inspired Nail Polish

To celebrate half a century of James Bond and the re-newel of the franchise with Skyfall, OPI has released this series of nail polish colors that play homage to the stylish movies that have been a staple of pop-culture for the past 6 decades. The collection features a wide variety of colors influenced by things such as Bond girls, cars, and the movie titles themselves. The highlight of the series is the limited edition top-coat “Man With the Golden Gun” featuring real 18k gold flakes. If you’ve always wanted to share in the glamorous escapades of England’s most famous spy, now at least your fingers can.

Death Star plush

Star Wars Super Deformed Death Star Plush – $12.99

Part of a collection that includes X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and Millennium Falcon plushes, this 7 inch ball of awesome is priced cheap and ready to sub in for those ugly throw pillows on your couch. Besides, who wouldn’t want to make the Dark Side a little more inviting and huggable? Plushes are usually purely on the girls’ side of the fence, but you can cuddle with this as you watch the original trilogy at home and still feel in tune with your heterosexuality. This would also fit in perfectly with those new Angry Bird Star Wars plushes. I’m buying this just for the one time someone acts up in my home theater/man cave. I shall then pick this up and say “Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station,” just as I throw it at them. Join me and together we shall pummel the galaxy!

The Studio Ghibli Movie Collection

Any fan of Hayao Miyazaki will be spirited away into a world of anime ecstasy by this terrific collection of the films of Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki and his talented cohorts at Ghibli have given us such masterpieces as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. There are 16 wonderful entries of the Ghibli oeuvre here, and each one is a treat. There are even some non-Miyazaki films here, such as the intense Grave of the Fireflies. This is as good as the world of animation gets.

Tangled print

Tangled Print/ ART

I won’t hide the fact I like Tangled, and my girlfriend loves it even more than me. However I really love a “darker” version of these fairy tales too. This picture really shows off that possibility, and its so incredibly detailed (I’ve seen it physically in a local store before). I am just fascinated by it! I’d love to hang it up in my house one day. I’ve created my own darker version of Tangled before too, so it’s even more awesome to me.

Coming up with Christmas lists are always kind of difficult for me. I mean, there are plenty of things out there I want, but I never actually expect someone to buy for me. That’s the great thing about this list, however, because it’s a wish list. With that in mind this would have to be my first choice:

Star Wars Chess

The Ultimate Star Wars Chess Set

Are there other Star Wars related chess sets out there, and a lot cheaper? Sure, but if you’re going to get one, might as well go all out. I can’t tell you how excited I’d be to find this sitting under my Christmas tree. Just look at this thing…it’s awesome! Even though it’s Star Wars related, even non-fans would be impressed with it’s presentation, and it’s sure to accent just about anywhere you put it in your home. Gentle Giant is making these things and the pre-orders are all sold out. However, you can still find some on eBay if you look hard enough.

Secondly, I’m going to be a tad more practical and go with the Indiana Jones Blu-Ray collection. That’s right folks, as of now, I still haven’t managed to purchase it. It’s a sore spot in my life right now and I could absolutely use it.

Carla Dobson

It’s that time of year again! There are so many movie, and movie-related items, to choose from that it makes it hard to narrow down. However, I did manage to get a couple ideas that popped out at me.

The first item on my list is a piece of metal wall art in the shape of a movie reel. My love of film is strong, and I like to let that shine with a little splash of decor in my home. There are several versions online, but the one that particularly catches my eye is from JNJ Metalworks currently featured on What can I say? I like the way it shows the film from the reel curling outward.

It is no secret that I am one of the biggest ‘Beetlejuice’ fans in the world, and am always checking out cute merchandise related to the Tim Burton classic. My second idea is perfect for any fan that enjoys a good cup of coffee now and then. It is a white mug with black lettering that reads, “Do You Have An Appointment With Juno?” This would be a good way to add just a little more fun into that morning cup of coffee. It comes from a Beetlejuice store on, and if coffee and cocoa are not your thing there are shot glasses and steins.
