21 Jump Street: SXSW Reviews

The film is based on a TV series from the 80’s that focused on a group of young undercover police officers that are sent back to high school to investigate crimes. But while the original took itself very seriously, this version realizes that audiences have changed quite a bit and the filmmakers delivered a great popcorn flick.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, who also wrote the screenplay, star and do an amazing job poking fun at anything and everything that might have been sacred about the original (and of highschool) and while the film may have stuck out like a sore thumb compared to other films at SXSW it was a breath of fresh air to find that it wasn’t a total disappointment. The pair is sent back to high school to try to bust a drug ring that is distributing a new, designer drug that is sweeping the area. While the Jock & Nerd switching places wasn’t exactly unexpected, the writers did a great job with poking fun of the changing dynamic of today’s teenagers and how out-of-place someone a decade removed from high school would actually be.

Rather than continue gushing about the film I’ll leave it at this. It’s funny, it’s entertaining, and it’s a really good time.
