2018 Oscar Nominations Revealed With The Shape of Water Leading the Charge

The Academy Awards are just a little over a month away (March 4th), but this morning begins the speculation on who will win big in earnest, as the nominees have been announced.  Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water managed to land a hefty 13 nominations (just one shy of the record), while Phantom Thread and Darkest Hour pulled in six a piece.  Other big contenders here are Lady Bird, Get Out, and Call Me By Your Name who managed to score four nominations each.

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman to land a Best Directing nomination, while Rachel Morrison is the FIRST woman nominated for Cinematography for her work on Mudbound.  There’s some great talent in this year’s nominations, and while there are a few snubs in there as well (once again, no love for Andy Serkis’s Caesar in Planet of the Apes), but overall it’s a strong list.
