Disney’s insistence on remaking every animated classic continues, as the new trailer for Lady and the Tramp makes perfectly clear.
Oh Disney, Disney…I’ll love you forever but when is it going to end? Okay, let’s start with the positives here: compared to other remakes I could mention (The Jungle Book comes to mind), the CGI in Lady and the Tramp looks amazing. Yes, I know the dogs are real (another plus), but whatever process they’re using to make them talk looks way more natural than whatever’s used in The Lion King. Aside from that, I don’t have much to say about this trailer that’s positive. I’m a firm believer that remakes need to do something new to the story. But if you’re at all familiar with the animated original, then one look at this new trailer will tell you…this is the exact same story over again.
See what I mean? I lost count of the animated moments that were recreated in this trailer, right up to Tramp nudging over a meatball during his romantic date with Lady. There’s even, to my considerable alarm, a glimpse of a Siamese-like cat wreaking havoc in the house. Granted, it didn’t look like traditional Siamese cats, but if the cats (I’m assuming there’s two) are in the story after all…does that mean the Siamese cat song is still included? I find that prospect troubling.
Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way, but it’s very hard for me to get excited about a film that exactly resembles one of my favorite films to watch when I was growing up. Regardless of feelings, Lady and the Tramp will soon arrive on Disney+ next month, starting November 12, 2019.
