Akira is Getting the 4K Treatment, and a New Anime Adaptation

After more than 30 years, Akira, long considered one of the greatest cyberpunk stories ever committed to film, will be receiving a 4K remaster, along with a new anime adaptation.

It’s news that should excite any fan of Akira. The legendary anime film will be receiving a 4K remaster that is scheduled to be released in Japan on April 24, 2020. On top of that, it’s also been revealed that Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira’s creator, is also working on a new anime adaptation of the story. It’s important to note that this is not a sequel to Akira, but rather a re-imagining of the story that will be more faithful to the original manga. While the 1988 film is iconic for a reason, it also skipped over a number of story beats, so it will be exciting to see an adaptation that follows the plot more closely.

A U.S. release date for the 4K remaster of Akira is unknown, but it’s suspected it might come out closer to the release of Taika Waititi’s live-action Akira film, currently scheduled to be released in 2021.
