The Avengers are re-assembling. Well, some of them, anyway. Although Avengers: Age of Ultron is in the can, the cameras aren’t going to be shoved back into the equipment room just yet. As is often the case, some reshoots have been deemed necessary.
According to the Daily Mail, a few weeks have been set aside for some cinematic alterations. It’s unclear whether some of the existing scenes are being redone or whether some additional material is being added that wasn’t in the original script. Or both. Either way, many of the cast members are being recalled to put their costumes on again. This news is nothing especially unusual, except for the inclusion of one particular actor who wasn’t supposed to be in the movie to begin with.
The Daily Mail reports…”Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Tom Hiddleston (bad-guy Loki) have all been asked to make themselves available over a two-week period in January to film additional scenes at Pinewood Studios.”
Seeing Tom Hiddleston’s name in the cast is the most intriguing thing about this otherwise business-as-usual bit of news. Earlier this month, the talented and underappreciated Idris Elba, (who plays Heimdall in the Thor films) let it slip that Hiddleston was in the sequel. He said that he was involved in a scene with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.
The Daily Mail article confirms the rumor that he is actually in the film. Despite the fact that both he and Joss Whedon have previously stated emphatically that Loki would not be in the sequel, it now appears that either they were telling us a great, big fib or plans have changed since they made those pronouncements.
What role will Loki play in the Avengers sequel? A cameo? A flashback? A post-credit sequence setting up the third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok? Or something Else? The possibilities are numerous and ripe speculation.
One possibility was hinted at in a Marvel event several weeks ago, when we saw a preview snippet from Avengers: Age of Ultron where Captain America and Tony Stark discuss confronting their dark sides, after some spell by the Scarlet Witch, who apparently made each of the Avengers face their innate dark side, except for Cap, because he doesn’t have a dark side. Whatever Thor saw induced him to fly off without warning. Did Thor’s vision include Loki and Heimdall?
Also Digital Spy has recently reported that Loki will play a role in the third film, Avengers: Infinity War. This makes sense, since we know Loki had an alliance with Thanos in the Avengers, helping to lead the attack on Manhattan, which somehow fits into Thanos’s overall master plan.
It’s always great to know that Hiddleston will be back on the screen reprising his scene-stealing performance as the Asgardian God of Mischief and adopted brother of Thor, who was last seen impersonating big papa Odin in Thor: Dark World. We’ll just have to wait until May 1st, 2015 (When Age of Ultron come out) find out what Loki is up to next, and how it will affect Marvel’s Phase 3 plans.
