Technically speaking, this is all rumor at this point, but considering it’s coming from the same trades that broke the news about Felicity Jones starring in Rogue One (which was officially announced a little later), I think it’s safe to put this in the “news” category than straight up rumor. The initial word comes from Deadline who reports:
Word is that Ben Mendelsohn is circling a lead role alongside Felicity Jones in Rogue One, the Star Wars spinoff to be directed by Gareth Edwards. If Mendelsohn isn’t on your radar, he ought to be. The Aussie actor has been memorable in films that include Exodus: Gods And Kings, Killing Them Softly and The Dark Knight Rises. But he is overwhelmingly good in the stellar cast of the new Netflix series Bloodline, with a performance that has to put him smack in the middle of the Emmy discussion.
The report was later confirmed by other notable trade sites, which pretty much means it’s a real thing that’s likely to happen. The thing to keep in mind, however, is that it doesn’t sounds like Mendelsohn has signed on to the project yet, but still in talks to do so. Talks can always fall through, so it’s not a “for sure” thing just yet.
Personally, I’m really interested to see what role he plans on taking. He’s a great actor and does a good job with the down on his luck/always looking for a big score kinda guy. He’s got that sleazeball quality to him that could easily put him in a scoundrel type of role. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but with Star Wars Celebration on the horizon and filming set to begin in a couple months, hopefully we’ll get some official cast list before too long.
