The news came in last night (thanks to The Wrap initially), that Alcon Entertainment is ready to get the ball rolling on the Blade Runner sequel as they’ve hired Denis Villeneuve (who most recently directed Prisoners and Sicario) to direct the feature. Better yet, Harrison Ford has been confirmed to reprise his original role of Deckard and will star in the film. Alcon’s executives had this to say about the annoucnement:
“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on ‘Prisoners.’ Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”
Obviously this is big news for fans of the show and science ficiton in general. While Ridley Scott had previously talked about returning to direct the sequel as well, it looks like his schedule won’t allow for it, and the studios are ready to move sooner. Filming is expected to begin in 2016 and will take place decades after the end of the previous movie.
What do you guys think about this new director coming on board and seeing Ford return?
