Well we can safely say that we didn’t see this coming. This afternoon, Warner Bros. Pictures announced who they had picked to be Lex Luthor in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel. Previously, it had been rumored that such actors as Bryan Cranston and Mark Strong were the leading candidates to play Superman’s nemesis, and most recently the rumors were swinging towards Joaquin Phoenix. However, Warner Bros. dropped a bomb on us by revealing that none of the rumored actors will get the part, and instead have cast Jesse Eisenberg.
Director Zach Snyder commented by saying this, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
However, that wasn’t the only big news of the day as it was also announced that Jeremy Irons is to play Batman’s friend and mentor, Alfred.
Snyder had this to say, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
While we may have mixed emotions on Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons, we can all rest assured that these are very skilled and talented actors, who could bring a new light to these characters. Always remember that there were those who said that Heath Ledger or Jack Nicholson could never play the Joker and they are some of the most iconic characters in film history!
Batman vs. Superman is set to hit theaters May 6, 2016.
