The more I hear about this Total Recall reboot, the more I’m oddly intrigued to see it. While I for the life of me can’t think of a remake in the last 10 years that actually worked, this project is sounding like less of a remake every day. And now? I don’t think it will resemble the original film at all.
But since I love baiting my readers, I’m not going to tell you about that right now. First, some casting. THR reports that Bryan Cranston, star of AMC’s tv series Breaking Bad and yes, the dad from Malcolm in the Middle, has been cast as the villain in the remake. Cranston will play Vilos Cohaagen, leader of the nation state called Euromerica. Of course, you have no idea what that means with a plot synopsis.
…That I’m still not going to give you. Instead, I’m going to go off on a strange tangent about how badass a name Vilos Cohaagen is. Seriously, isn’t it awesome! I know it was the same name that Ronny Cox’s character in the original Total Recall had, but still! And having Bryan Cranston step into the role is perfect in my opinion. Can’t wait to see who they cast as Richter, if this plot even calls for a Richter in the first place.
But I think I’ve left you hanging long enough. Here’s the plot details, once again courtesy of THR:
The new story involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn’t know for which side. Cranston would play Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of Euromerica who, under the cover of protecting his people, is secretly readying an invasion of New Shanghai.
Personally, I think it sounds like a step in the right direction. If they want this film to work, I believe it has to be totally different from the first. Eliminating Mars sounds like there best option at this point. I never thought I would say this, but I’m stoked to see where director Len Wiseman takes this story when the film comes out next July.
