Cassandra Cain to be Played by Newcomer in “Birds of Prey”

The cast for DC‘s all-female crime fighting film, Birds of Prey, is finally complete.  From the beginning, Margot Robbie was signed on to reprise her role as everyone’s favorite harlequin, Harley Quinn.  Then, Warner Bros. and DC looked to Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Rosie Perez to play Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya, respectively.  While we were waiting to find out who would play Cassandra Cain, the last member of the Birds of Prey, WB signed Ewan McGregor to play the villainous Black Mask in the Cathy Yan-directed film.  Now, the final piece of the puzzle has been found and it isn’t someone anyone expected to play the woman who becomes one of the deadliest crime fighters.

According to a report from Variety, Warner Bros. and DC are in negotiations with Ella Jay Basco to play Cassandra Cain (a.k.a. Batgirl, Black Bat, Orphan).

If that name doesn’t ring any bells, that’s to be expected.  Prior to landing this role, Basco had only done guest spots in Grey’s Anatomy, Veep, and Superior Donuts.  It’s definitely an interesting choice to go with an actress as young as Basco to play Cain, but it’s not without a viable reason.

Per DC Comics backstory of Cassandra Cain: Cassandra Cain – aka Batgirl, aka Black Bat, aka Orphan was groomed to become an assassin by her parents David Cain and Lady Shiva, who also happen to be assassins.  While she became an expert martial artist, her limited social interaction caused her to become mute and illiterate.

It appears that for the Birds of Prey film, we won’t be getting a legit, well-established Batgirl-type hero.  That is, unless, Warner Bros. is thinking about making her role similar to Hitgirl in Kickass, though that would be a bold choice for sure.  However, it is fair to assume that given the casting of a young actress like Basco and Cain’s storied origin that Birds of Prey may serve as an origin story for her.

We won’t know for sure until Birds of Prey releases February 7, 2020!
