Today brings our first look at Netflix’s upcoming action flick, The Old Guard, which sees Charlize Theron lead a team of immortal mercenaries against their greatest threat.
I haven’t had a chance to read the graphic novel this film is based on, but I absolutely love the idea behind it. There’s a lot of room for an interesting story and more than enough action, so I’m excited to get our first look at The Old Guard today:
Welp….Ok. Don’t get me wrong, I think there’s a lot of potential in this, and other things I’ve seen/heard about the film have me excited. This just isn’t that great a trailer. It feels too generic, without any sense of what makes this story feel more unique. Either way, I’m still going to be checking this out.
Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
The Old Guard will hit Netflix on July 10, 2020.
