Daniel Kaluuya is Producing, Of All Things, a ‘Barney’ Movie

In news that came out of nowhere, it would seem that Daniel Kaluuya is producing a live-action Barney movie with the help of Mattel films.

Barney is set to join a number of Mattel properties currently being adapted to film, including Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe, and Barbie. Personally, this seems like an odd choice for a live-action film adaptation, but there seems to be a lot of excitement at Mattel about the project:

“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” said Kaluuya. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.” “Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” added Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

I’m highly dubious about a lovable purple dinosaur like Barney being adapted into a live-action film, so it will be very interesting to see how this concept develops. If anyone can pull this off, it’s Daniel Kaluuya.
