In a shocking turn of events, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are no longer attached to a Star Wars trilogy that was scheduled to begin in 2022.
Originally reported by Deadline, the news comes as quite a shock, given how hyped their attachment to the project was back in early 2018. At the time, it was announced that this new Star Wars trilogy would be the first major Star Wars film project to come out after The Rise of Skywalker and the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. Some were excited about the Game of Thrones writers joining the galaxy far, far away, but others were less than impressed after the mixed reviews the final season of Game of Thrones received. However it appears Benioff and Weiss leaving the project has nothing to do with Game of Thrones and everything to do with their recent deal with Netflix.
The pair recently signed a 9-figure deal with Netflix, and reportedly this will take up so much of their time that they decided they couldn’t work with the streaming giant and on a Star Wars trilogy at the same time. It’s not clear whether this particular trilogy will still be happening or not, but one thing is for sure, Benioff and Weiss won’t be a part of it.
