While it’s not everything I was hoping for in this trailer (I really wanted more apes), considering the depth of VFX required for the film and the fact that it’s a teaser trailer, it’s still pretty damn good! For the most part, this teaser is all about establishing the tone of the film and showing how bad things have become since the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It’s very much a post-apocalyptic style film, and shows the dire straights the humans have found themselves in.
On top of that, we see Gary Oldman rallying humans to the cause of fighting back against the apes; the origins of a war that will presumably shape the story of the film. While we don’t see the apes do much in the movie, it’s still a pretty cool scene and shows how advanced the VFX are. This Summer the first image from the film was released and was the exact same one of Caesar in this trailer, but the differences are noticable as they’ve improved the CG in the months since. Plus, seeing him give a command (seemingly to attack) was just damn cool.
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
I’m very excited by this trailer and eager to see more (which any good marketing is supposed to do), but what do you guys think? Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will hit theaters on July 11, 2014.
