Disney Moves Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War to April

2018 is still young, but if there is one thing we just learned, it’s that Robert Downey Jr. gets his way.

In a recent thread on twitter, Robert Downey Jr. and the Marvel Studios Social Media team bantered back and forth over seeing Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War early.  In the end, the humorous exchange resulted in the most highly anticipated Avengers movie being moved from May 4 to April 27.  Obviously, Disney asked Downey Jr.(‘s publicist) to help with this announcement.  No way did Marvel’s social media team just do this on a whim (otherwise, there would be an opening at Marvel Studios).  Nevertheless, the strategy seems sound.

Despite sitting in the May 4, 2018 slot for several years, the idea to push up one of Marvel‘s biggest movies up by a week means more revenue and less competition for the feature film.  In their previous slot, Avengers would’ve had a good run at #1 for 2 weeks before 20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool 2 released on May 18, 2018.  Then, just a week later, Disney would have a conflict of interest as Solo: A Star Wars Story releases on May 25, 2018.

By moving Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War to April 27, Disney guarantees an extra week at #1 and the prospect to earn more money, for what is most likely the most expensive film of the franchise.  After that, all bets will be off if the Deadpool sequel winds up taking #1, followed by Solo.

Although, it is surprising that Disney would make this decision so late.  With just a little over a month before the movie’s release, this is usually the time audiences are reserving their seats for the upcoming film or studios are pushing back movies in favor of more time.  Very rarely do we see a movie release date become earlier with just a short time frame remaining.

I suppose we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, though, and appreciate the fact that we’ll be able to relish in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War sooner than expected.  Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War will now release April 27, 2018!
