Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid took a big step forward as they’ve cast Halle Bailey as the titular character.
Just last week word came out that Melissa McCarthy had snagged the villainous role in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, but today brings OFFICIAL word about who’s playing the iconic Ariel for the film. Singer/actress Halle Bailey (from the Chloe X Halle R&B duo) will portray Disney princess for Rob Marshall, who had this to say about the casting:
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”
To be honest, I’m not at all familiar with Bailey’s previous work, but I’m excited to see this project move forward. Production on the film will start in early 2020 (and Disney says to expect more casting announcements in the coming weeks), and will feature classic songs from the animated film, along with new ones from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
What do you think of this The Little Mermaid casting?
