Drew Goddard to Helm Sony/Marvel’s New Spider-Man Movie

With Spider-Man at long last able to join up with the ranks of other Marvel properties, speculation has been running rampant on how he’ll fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and who is likely to take up the mantle this time around.  While, we’re no closer to know who will be the next actor in line for the role (despite some earlier rumors today), we do know who Sony/Marvel is trusting to bring the new film to the big screen in 2017: Drew Goddard.

If the name sounds familiar in terms of the Spider-Man world, Goddard had previously been hired to write/direct the Sinister Six movie for Sony.  That project is now going by the wayside in order to accound for the new direction of the franchise, but it sounds like the super-villain team will still be a big part of the story for the new web-slinger.  Latino Review broke the news (but has since been backed up by The Wrap and other sources):

Kevin Feige and the Marvel team will be producing the new series at Sony in what is envisioned as a three part series to come out over consecutive summers.  There is talk about calling the series SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN after yet another Marvel comics series ala the last films being called “Amazing.”

At one point they were developing a film that was just going to be a spinoff called THE SINISTER SIX.  That’s scrapped but the big news is that the director of that film, Drew Goddard, will write AND direct the Spectacular Spider Man movie.

Better, yet, this scoop also comes with some potential details on the future of Spider-Man on the big screen:

No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given

New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role.  The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.

A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers

The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.

So it looks like elements of that Sinister Six movie will make it into the new Spectacular Spider-Man film, and perhaps biggest news of all, IRON MAN might be making an appearance.  I mean, what better way to show Spider-Man is officially part of the “universe” than have Iron Man make a cameo right off the bat?  Especially if the rumors of Spidey showing up in Civil War turn out to be true, this will provide a great connective tissue.

What’s interesting is the set-up here of being a ‘trilogy’.  Does this include the Marvel films that Spider-Man will show up in too, or just his solo films?  Hard to say at this point, but at the least, it sounds like things are moving quickly and in the right direction.  What do you guys think about Goddar helming the new film and the possiblity of Iron Man showing up in it?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
