For weeks, DC and Jared Leto have been teasing us with little snippets here and there of what the Joker will look like. Well now we know as they finally released our first look at the finished product of Jared Leto as The Joker.
As you can see, this isn’t your father’s joker or really yours for that matter. This is actually a completely original depiction of the clown prince of crime. You can tell they were really trying to go with a more insanely, criminal look. Taking a step away from the sociopathic crazy clown we’re so used to and replacing him with a more “Damaged”, as his face tattoo says, criminal inspired theme.
Many will fondly remember the last time the Joker was shown on the big screen, when Heath Ledger earned an Oscar for the role in The Dark Knight. Others will remember Jack Nicholson taking on the clown. What both of these had in common was that they were more of a mobster than a criminal. From what we can discern of Leto’s Joker is that he may not even be a part of organized crime. In fact, he reminds me of the Joker in The Batman (2004) when the Joker was frequent resident of Arkham Asylum, seen below.
Everyone will have their own opinion of the new Joker but you can’t deny their originality. I’m hesitant to like this version. It’s so foreign to me, this Joker. I suppose I’ll have to wait until Suicide Squad comes out to see if Leto can at least enthrall me like his predecessors have in the past.
Suicide Squad will be in theaters August 5th, 2016
