While the Transformers franchise in general seems to have hit a snag after The Last Knight, fans of the series still have the Bumblebee prequel to look forward to, maybe. Today sees the launch of the film’s first trailer and something about it seems to be missing:
This isn’t a bad trailer, per se, but it’s not good either. On the whole, it just feels kind of boring and that’s not something you ever want out of a Transformers movie. The 80s setting is cool, but knowing the timeline and the events of the previous films (taht all take place AFTER), we know the stakes are significantly lower.
A low-stakes story, in and of itself, isn’t a bad thing (it’s one of the reasons I loved Solo: A Star Wars Story), but the approach here makes it seem like they’re still trying for something “epic” within those constraints. Not to mention the story of an alien (or other outcast type character) hiding out from the military while also having to deal with a bad alien at the same time is nothing new.
This is only a teaser trailer, so perhaps I’m being too harsh. Regardless, the first look at what could possibly be the last Transformers film before a big reboot is not a great one. What do you think of it?
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
