With only their X-Men characters to latch onto (especially since Fantastic Four bombed), 20th Century Fox is understandably eager to find another property to make a big franchise out of. Tracking Board is reporting that they’re turning to video games for inspiration and are actively developing a Mega Man movie for the big screen:
20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment have started development on a fan favorite in the video game world. Heralded as one of the most popular video game franchises in history, MEGA MAN is now on his way to the big screen. Feel free to be cautiously optimistic.
One positive sign of things to come is Chernin Entertainment. David Ready and Michael Finfer are overseeing for the company, while Peter Chernin produces. Together they have a pretty solid pedigree for sci-fi action movies, including the recent/upcoming Planet of the Apes films.
Details at this point are scarce, because, as they report, it’s just now in the early stages of development. I’m assuming they’re talking about a live-action adaptation of the popular gaming franchise, which could actually make a good fit for the theaters. While video games haven’t traditionally done well in movies, the same could once be said about superhero films, and now they’re the top films on the market.
Since Mega Man could essentially be treated as something of a superhero property, it’s a story that could make a good transition onto film and suck in audiences on all sides. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Since it’s so early in development lots of things could change, but in the meantime, what do you guys think about a Mega Man movie?
