Ghost in the Shell Movie Officially Signs Scarlet Johansson to Lead

Looks like Dreamworks Pictures is moving full steam ahead with a live-action adaptation of the popular anime movie, Ghost in the Shell, as they’ve hired Scarlet Johansson (previously rumored for the film) to take the lead role of Motoko Kusanagi…though the official report from Variety makes no mention of that name, it’s making me think they’ll change it up:

Johansson is set to star in DreamWorks’ adaptation of the popular anime pic “Ghost in the Shell.” Deadline Hollywood had reported that the actress had the offer to star but at the time she was still undecided about taking the role. Sources now say she has agreed to star in the pic.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Rupert Sanders is on board to direct. Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the film from a script by Bill Wheeler. Mark Sourian is exec producing.

Ghost in the Shell already has plenty of fans, and it’s long been regarded as one of the best animes out there.  I enjoyed the show, and it’s heady themes, so if the live-action version can pull off those ideas, with the action and fun of the original this could be a massive hit.  By and large, I love the idea of Johansson becoming such a popular action actor!

What do you think about her taking on the lead in this film?  Are you excited that this movie is getting made?
