In a big switch-up, it’s been announced that Godzilla vs Kong, the fourth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, will now be released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on March 26.
Many films, as we well remember, were delayed last year due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. One such film was Godzilla vs Kong. Originally scheduled to hit theaters in November 2020, the film was originally pushed back to an unspecified time, but we now know that the film will hit theaters (those that are open) and HBO Max on March 26, 2021.
Essentially, Godzilla vs Kong is doing the the same thing that Wonder Woman 1984 did on Christmas Day, having the simultaneous theatrical and streaming release. This is all well and good, as I’ve been very eager to see Godzilla vs Kong, but I do see an increasingly big problem with this update. See, this change in release dates means that we’re about two months out from a really big film becoming available….and we’ve yet to see a single trailer or promo for it. We, the general public, outside of one or two teaser posters, literally have no idea what this film looks like. If a trailer is not forthcoming in the wake of his announcement, I’m going to start feeling very afraid about what Godzilla vs Kong looks like. Because as a general rule, the less we see of a film before it hits theaters, the worse that film is likely to be.
That being said, I am happy that we now don’t have that much longer to wait to see Godzilla vs Kong, even if I am disappointed that I won’t be able to see this epic on a big screen that it was surely intended to be seen on.
What do you think of the news that Godzilla vs Kong is hitting theaters and HBO Max at the same time starting March 26, 2021?
