The moment Fate of the Furious ended, Universal Pictures saw an opening to give Dwayne Johnson‘s character, Hobbs, the spin-off film, they so desired. It turns out, all it took was a positive reception of Jason Statham‘s character, Shaw (which really should’ve been Calvin), in the over-the-top 8th installment of the franchise. It didn’t hurt that the chemistry between the two was palpable, as well. Since then, Universal greenlit the project, signed their two high profile badasses, and put pen to paper, courtesy of Fast and Furious‘ own Chris Morgan. Now, a new report sees another A-list actor joining the ranks!
According to a report from Variety, Idris Elba is in final negotiations with Universal Pictures to play the villain in the Dwayne Johnson-Jason Statham buddy cop spinoff of the Fast and Furious series, Hobbs and Shaw.
In the words of the immortal Jim Ross, “Business has just picked up!”.
Idris Elba is one of the most talented actors of our generation. Whether it has been in his critically-acclaimed BBC show Luther or Heimdall in the Thor films, he’s always found a way to shine in whatever film he found himself in. Now, playing opposite Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as a potentially formidable villain, Elba has a new arena to play in, with the often ridiculous Fast and Furious universe. I only assume he’ll be in a space station and Hobbs and Shaw will have to kick a rocket into space, ride it up, and kick some ass.
Hobbs and Shaw is being helmed by Deadpool 2 director David Leitch withNeal H. Moritz, Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions partners, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, Statham, and Chris Morgan producing. Executive Producers are Kelly McCormick, Steve Chasman, Amanda Lewis, Ainsley Davies, and Ethan Smith.
Hobbs and Shaw is set to release July 26, 2019!
Idris Elba’s next project is his upcoming comedy series on Netflix, “Turn Up Charlie“.
