Independence Day 2: Jeff Goldblum Will Return With a Pair of Fresh Faces

We’ve known for a while now that Will Smith wouldn’t be coming back for Independence Day 2 (despite that first film being his big boost into stardom), but fortunately Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role for the new movie!  The director himself confirmed the casting last night, and THR also got word about some of the fresh faces that will be coming to the film, Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth:

Jessie Usher, the lead of Starz’s series Survivor’s Remorse, has been cast in Fox’s sequel Independence Day 2. Liam Hemsworth has also been cast in in a lead role and Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role from the original.

Independence Day 2 is a big get for Usher, who will play a central character in the new film as the son of Smith’s character. Smith’s role in the first blockbuster helped establish him as a star, kicking his career up to the next level.

While Smith himself isn’t in the film, obviously his presence will still be felt as his step-son (the young boy in the first film) will be one of the primary characters.  Personally, I’m pretty excited we’re getting casting info, as that means we’re getting closer and closer to this happening.  Sure, it’s a sequel to a 20 year old film, but it was one of my favorite films as a child and even as I grew older, it seemed like something ripe with storytelling potential.

I guess we’ll find out on June 24, 2016 when the new film releases.  What do you guys think about this casting for Independence Day 2?  Are you excited that at least Goldblum is returning?
