Jamie Foxx is Django in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

The news of Jamie Foxx’s casting came from, once again, Jeff Goldsmith.  He seems to be on the ball with Django Unchained news, so I’d trust him.  That, and Variety later confirmed the news.  The tweet:

“Will Smith is out! Inside sources tell me that Tarantino has chosen Oscar winner @iamjamiefoxx to play Django!”

Variety also believes Foxx’s Ray co-star Kerry Washington has auditioned for the role of Django’s wife, but she is just one of many who has auditioned.  Still, now that Foxx is cast, maybe she’ll have some leeway for getting the part.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m still really excited to see Django Unchained. A disappointing casting announcement will not distract me from what sounds like an awesome movie.  However, in comparison to his other candidates, Jamie Foxx seems to be the inferior.  Both Will Smith and Idris Elba, in my opinion, were better choices.

To be fair, Jamie Foxx has delivered some great performances.  He won an Oscar for Ray, and he’s great in Michael Mann’s under-appreciated film, Collateral. But it seems to me like he was the third option; Tarantino wanted Will Smith, but he passed on the project.  He then turned to Idris Elba (maybe; it was never confirmed) but Elba instead went to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. So Tarantino choose third best.

And yes, I do believe Tarantino can get a great performance out of Foxx for the movie.  But both Elba and Smith seemed like much more interesting choices, in my opinion.  I guess time will tell if Foxx turns out to be a better choice.
