The DCEU has notably had its fair share of problems since the release of, the critically-despised, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, a new report from Variety could have the winds of fate turning in their favor, as the former writer/director of both Avengers films, Joss Whedon, is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce a standalone Batgirl film.
It’s been well-documented that Whedon’s departure from Marvel Studios was not as clean as most would have hoped, as is evident by the plot-hole riddled Avengers: Age of Ultron. Still, Whedon was instrumental in setting the course for where the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would journey. With a deal signed and sealed, and a succussful run with Batgirl, he could use his expertise to course correct the DCEU, as well.
Speaking of Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, this will be the first time a Batgirl film will ever be attempted for the big screen. No doubt fans will be eyeing this one with as much scrutiny, as was done with Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. Regardless, the Batgirl solo film shows how invested Warner Bros and DC are in embracing all of their Gotham City characters. Batman, Nightwing, Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, and now Batgirl have all been announced as future films on the massive DC agenda.
I really like both the selection of Joss Whedon and the adaptation of Batgirl. As much as she has ties to Gotham, the point I like the most is that DC/WB are making it a point to utilize all of their female characters, something Marvel has yet to do. They’ll already have the first female solo movie in Wonder Woman, later this year. Now, they’ll add Gotham City Sirens, an ensemble of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy, and Batgirl to the list. Perhaps we’ll even see Barbara Gordon in the Sirens film?
As more information pours out of DC and WB, we’ll have it for you right here on Cinelinx!
What are your thoughts on the signing and the Batgirl film.
