Warner Bros. has told us about a lot of DC superhero film ideas that just haven’t happened to pan out (looking at you Nightwing movie), but this one isn’t one of them. Since WB announced plans to create a movie based around the all-female crime-fighting team, Birds of Prey, they’ve been firing at all cylinders to make this movie happen. With Christina Hodson‘s (Bumblebee, Batgirl) script in hand and Margot Robbie on board, WB hired acclaimed director Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), named a villain in Black Mask, and have recently spent the last two days dominating the newswaves with a release date and casting news for Black Canary and Huntress.
I think it’s safe to say, it’s being fast-tracked.
The release date for Birds of Prey to set for February 7, 2020. Joining Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn are Jurnee Smollet-Bell (True Blood, Underground) as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) as Huntress. That leaves just Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya left to be cast.
For Smollet-Bell, nabbing the role as Black Canary is a big boost for her already well-established star. So far, her career has mostly been spent on TV shows like True Blood and more recently Underground. Now, she’ll be able to take her talents to the big screen as one of the most well-known heroes in DC’s catalog, Black Canary. Before 2020 hits, you’ll be able to find her in J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele‘s HBO drama Lovecraft Country.
On the other hand, Winstead is no stranger to big screen. She’s been in several big box office hits like Live Free or Die Hard, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and 10 Cloverfield Lane. In joining Birds of Prey as the Huntress, she adds another feather to her ever-filling cap.
To read more about the characters they’ll play, see below:
Black Canary – Real Name: Dinah Laurel Lance, is the daughter of Larry Lance and Dinah Drake. In certain variations of the character, Dinah Laurel takes up the mantle of Black Canary, a title her mother once owned, and fights crime using her metagene-created primal scream.
Huntress – Real Name: Helena Bertinelli, is a member of a prominent mafia family, who turns into a vigilante after her entire family dies. She’s hell-bent on hunting down the entire mafia.
Birds of Prey releases in theaters February 7, 2020.
