Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg Will Be Writing Star Wars Movies, But Not the Ones We Thought

A source from THR brings the news that Kasdan and Kinberg are indeed working with Disney and writing scripts for upcoming Star Wars movies.  They aren’t necessarily Episodes VIII and IX, however.  Instead, it appears as though they’re writing scripts for potential spin-off movies, focusing on other characters.

Their scripts could turn into official “Episodes” in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters. Disney CEO Robert Iger said the goal is to release a Star Wars movie “every two to three years,” and some could easily focus on other pieces of the expansive mythos (similar to Marvel’s Avengers universe).

Seems to make sense to me.  When the word of this deal first came down, and mention of new Star Wars films every 2-3 years, my first thought was of how they could do standalone films without needing to do entire trilogies all the time.  I think it’d be a great chance for fans to see the spotlight shown on some of their favorite characters and explore the vast universe Lucas created (much like the books have done).

No official word from Disney just yet, but I don’t see why this wouldn’t be true.
