Matthew McConaughey May Be Joining Stephen King’s The Dark Tower

Those in the Stephen King reading circle, know quite a lot about King’s series The Dark Tower. However, for those who aren’t familiar or have next on your queue here is the brief synopsis of the series.

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum.  It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

The Dark Tower is one of those stories that would make an enthralling television and film franchise. The series could even rival that of Game of Thrones, in terms of quality of story. Hollywood wholeheartedly agrees.  However, they’ve been trying since 2012 to do something about it.  At one point, the franchise had a committment from Javier Bardem to play Deschain.  With all the speed bumps, though, Bardem ended up walking from the project.

Now, fast forward three years later and The Dark Tower may be adding Oscar Winner Matthew McConaughey to play their villain, The Man in Black.  The Man in Black is an evil sorceror of sorts who is hell bent on stopping Deschain at all costs….Or he could be Deschain himself.  Reports are that he’s been offered his choice between them.

This is still very early in the process but adding McConaughey could be the just the juice needed to make this project be fast tracked to production.  Plus, with the idea that this could not only be a film franchise but also a tv franchise, adding McConaughey would be a major ratings grab too. McConaughey is no stranger to big budget tv shows, either.  He was in the first True Detective season along with Woody Harrelson.

We should have confirmation soon as Sony would like to meet their theater release deadline of January 13, 2017.
