Looks Like Obi-Wan Kenobi Standalone is Happening; In Early Talks With Director

If you’re an avid reader of Cinelinx.com (who isn’t?) you might have read the headline and thought yourself, “Duh, that’s old news.”.  That’s because for years we’ve been hot on the trail of the Obi-Wan Kenobi movies for years.  In fact, back in 2014 we reported that the ideas for the spin-off were being developed.  Three years later and it appears Lucasfilm is finally ready to begin working on making this into a reality.

An exclusive from THR, has confirmed our suspicions that an Obi-Wan movie is in the works, but hasn’t quite named an actor for the titular role.  The reason for that is due to the fact that this film is in early stages of pre-production.  There is no script, there are no actors, and there isn’t even a director…yet.

Part of the report names Oscar Nominated Director Stephen Daldry as being in early talks to lead the development in this film.  Daldry is best known for his work on stage and the films that earned him an Oscar nod, The Hours, The Reader, and his first film Billy Elliot.  Most recently, he directed a few episodes of Netflix’s The Crown, which garnered his an Emmy nomination.

Suffice to say, everything he touches to turns to gold, so get excited Obi-Wan fans.

As for Obi-Wan, himself, Ewan McGregor has publicly stated several times that he’d love to return as the Jedi Master, but so far nothing official has come down from Disney/Lucasfilm on the actor’s status.  Right now, they’re focusing on the script and then planning on deciding who will play Kenobi.

What we do know, is that this film will be set after Revenge of the Sith, with Kenobi living as a hermit on Tatooine, watching over Luke Skywalker.  Whether or not he stays on the desert plan the whole time and whether or not this become a full-blown trilogy, to fill the space after Episode IX, remains to be seen.

Lucasfilm is also considering creating Boba Fett and Yoda films.  The next solo film will release May 25, 2018 with the (still) Untitled Han Solo movie.
