It looks like the next few years are going to be amazing for DC fans. First came the rumors of a Batman: The Long Halloween movie that fans have been clamoring to be made for years. Now, in news that is sure to make Superman fans exceptionally happy, there are persistent rumors that an adaptation of Superman: Red Son is finally happening! For those not familiar, Superman: Red Son was an Elseworlds story published in 2003 that takes the story of Superman and gives it a significant twist: what if, instead of crashing in midwestern America, Kal-El’s spaceship had landed in the middle of Soviet Russia? As a result, instead of becoming a champion of American ideals, Superman grows up to become a hero of the communist state, which naturally changes the course of history in numerous ways.
Since Red Son is based on an alternate timeline, the film would be considered a standalone with no connection to the rest of the DC Animated Universe. A substantial cast list has already come to light and it is loaded with talent. Names attached to the film include: Amy Acker, Anna Vocino, Jim Ward, Jason Isaacs, Jason Spisak, Jim Meskimen, Paul Williams, Phil Lamarr, Phil Morris, Roger Craig Smith, Sasha Roiz, Tara Strong, Travis Willingham, Vanessa Marshall, William Salyers and Winter Zoli. Most of these actors have worked on DC animated projects in the past. It’s not been confirmed who is voicing which role, though it is suspected that Jason Isaacs could be voicing Lex Luthor (who plays a significant role in the story). No release date is known as yet, but it’s speculated an official announcement could come from DC later this year.
It’s exciting to see DC finally give some attention to the stories fans have been begging to see.
