All of us Star Wars fans have been dying for casting news on the upcoming J.J. Abrams directed Episode VII…but so far, nothing official has come out. All we’re left with is a whole bunch of speculation. Some of it ridiculous, but sometimes awfully juicy. I’d list today’s rumor in the latter category, as a report from Film Chronicles says they’ve heard that Benedict Cumberbatch has already scored a role in the film.
Obviously this should be treated as pure rumor, as they list no information on their source, but it’s not entirely without merit. Cumberbatch has mentioned in the past his love of Star Wars, and Abrams has a tendency to work with the same actors he likes. So it’s entirely possible that it has happened. There’s no telling in what capacity, but let’s all be honest here, he’d be a bad ass villain. Seriously, I couldn’t think of a better bad guy.
Make of this rumor what you will. It could be true, and there’s plenty of reason to think so. Cumberbatch recently dropped out of Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak film without giving a reason. Perhaps it’s because of a newly acquired Star Wars role? That would be a big reason, I’d think, for him to back out of the project, and as I mentioned, Abrams likes to work with familiar actors.
Hopefully we’ll have official confirmation of casting in the near future. All that I’ve heard form friends and other sources is that we should be getting some official information on Episode VII soon…as in possibly this week soon. Let’s just hope that turns out to be ture, so we can start putting some of this speculation aside.
What do you guys think about this rumor? Would you want to see Cumberbatch in Star Wars?
