Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Could Introduce Thrawn to the New Canon

Since Disney bought up Lucasfilm and all things Star Wars, it seems like every rumor or any new casting addition could have been Grand Admiral Thrawn.  The character was introduced back in 1991 as the seminal villain to kick off the Star Wars Expanded Universe and has remained one of fans’ favorite.  He was smart, posed a serious threat to our heroes, and his influence seemed to color the events of all the books that came after.

When the old EU was swept away, to be replaced with the new cohesive Star Wars canon, fans have been clamoring to see him return in some form.  Last year’s Aftermath book book seemed to tease the possibility of his return, but a new rumor today suggests he could also pop up in Star Wars Rebels.

Our ever reliable friends over on Making Star Wars, have heard that the Grand Admiral will make his appearance early in Season Three of the animated series, providing a new menace to our Rebel heroes.  What’s interesting, is that they’ve heard he’ll be largely the same as he was represented in the books (a brilliant tactician, and a blue-skinned Chiss).  This would certainly be interesting to see that happen, and could make a lot of fans happy.

With more than 30 years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, there’s plenty of time for Grand Admiral Thrawn to still have his own canonical story, that fits in with everything else, while not bringing over EVERYTHING from the rest of his stories.  I still don’t expect to see Mara Jade at any point (though one could hope).  For now, it’s still a rumor and things could change, but for now, it’s something for Thrawn fans to keep in mind.

What do you guys think of this latest rumor?  Would you like to see Thrawn show up in Star Wars Rebels
