Star Wars rumors are always fun to read, and this week there are quite a few of them, so let’s get right to it…
First of all, the rumors of Harrison Ford’s ankle injury were greatly under-rated. He actually has a broken bone in his lower leg. He is currently confined to a wheelchair. While Disney has said that Ford will be on the sidelines for 8 weeks, Ain’t It Cool News reports that word from the set indicates that Ford could be out for as much as 5 or 6 months. If this is true, it will force Disney to either delay the film or otherwise contradict their claim that they’ll shoot around his scenes and wait for Ford to return.
This is a massive problem for JJ Abrams and Disney because–according to Ain’t It Cool–Ford is the main character of Episode 7. The site Jedi News reports the following: “We understand a meeting was called this morning at Pinewood to discuss the situation, but the early word is that production of the film could be pushed back by a substantial amount of time.” Could Ford’s injury force Disney to push the film back 6 months; which would make it either a Christmas 2015 release or be shoved back to 2016?
There’s another rumor that the bulk of Ford’s scenes could be rewritten for another character. The New York Post reports that the role being played by Oscar Isaac in Episode VII could be expanded. While no official word has been confirmed about the nature of Isaac’s character, the Post report says that he may be playing a “descendant or even the son of Ford’s Han Solo character”. As a result of this on-screen connection, he could be getting more screen time because of Ford’s injury.
Someone needs to fill in for Ford if the rumors of him being the leading man of this installment are true. According to Aint’ It Cool, the main storyline will have Han Solo leading a team of younger characters on a galaxy-wide search for Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The search may have something to do with a trio of deadly Jedi Hunters (who wear Mandalorian armor like Boba Fett) played by Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver and David Oyelowo.
The oddest rumor of the week is that Tom Cruise has a surprise cameo in the film. Cruise apparently visited his friend J.J. Abrams on the set one day, beginning a swirl of rumors. Cruise himself has denied the rumors but that hasn’t stopped them from spreading.
Of course, none of this is officially confirmed yet (except for Ford’s broken leg) and we’re as curious as you are. When we know more, you’ll know more.
