An individual close to the project has told The Wrap that while Tatum’s reps are still in active discussions with the studio, “Something is up” with Gambit. The Studio has been in the process of testing young actresses for the female lead, however it looks like director Rupert Wyatt is going to need to start testing for the lead himself, as Tatum is planning to exit the project all together.
Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin had planned to be on as producers of the film. It remains to be seen if they will remain attached at all, which would leave Simon Kinberg and Laura Shuler Donner on their own.
Tatum was originally suppose to play the character in Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine but had to pass then due to commitments with Paramount’s G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra. Said to have been a passion project for Tatum, he was recently seen at San Diego Comic Con hyping his appearance as the mutant thief Remy LeBeau.
This would be a big shot to the film, as Tatum has been championing it for quite some time now. Almost on a Ryan Reynolds/Deadpool like level. I for one am excited to see what he brings to the role and hope that conflict can be patched up and we can get rolling.
This situation is going to have to be resolved soon, as “Gambit” is due for an Oct. 7 2016 release.
