The 12 Brightest and Most Visceral Moments of Harry Potter

So, while you’re whittling the day away waiting until you can escape the daily demands and take in The Deathly Hallows Part 1, let’s take a look at some of the most memorable Harry Potter moments that have thrilled us through the last decade. Time to get nostalgic!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)

The Forming of the Triad
It all comes down to chemistry. The true friendship of Hermione and Ron is an anchor for Harry, and they both have traits and skills that are invaluable to Harry. The first time Harry and Ron meet Hermione, one would never think in a thousand years that the three of them would end up being the bestest friends of all time. It’s also cited as being one of THE most brilliant casting coups of all time. This was a defining moment.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

Harry Battles Parseltongue
Harry discovers the identity of the heir of Slytherin and must fight the basilisk. He must save Ginny, who lays petrified on the floor of the Chamber of Secrets, and prevent Voldemort from returning. Harry destroys Tom Riddle’s journal, which is a Horcrux, and saves Ginny from the damage the book caused. Isn’t it poetic that she saves him from a book later on? She knows the danger that can come from a seemingly simple book. Truths are revealed and we delve even deeper into the awesomeness that is Harry Potter. Brilliant.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Hermoine Punches Malfoy

Now I’m not promoting girls and violence; I still remember how much of a fuss this scene caused. But come on, let’s admit it. We all felt strangely gratified that Malfoy was getting what he deserved. Definitely a memorable moment.

Expecto Patronum!
This has to be my favorite Harry Potter moment ever. It is here that Harry realizes just how powerful he is. He had believed with all his heart that his dad was going to save Sirius and so he waited, holding out until it was almost too late. Seeing the glowing white stag as the symbol used to represent Harry’s Patronus was breathtaking, and that moment when Harry realizes he must be the one to save Sirius is awe inspiring. And the wonderful thing about it is that he was driven to save his uncle by the most powerful force there is: love. What is more powerful than that?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

The Death of Cedric and Voldemort Reborn Into the Flesh

Cedric’s death was a shocking moment. The way Voldemort says, “Kill the spare,” is chilling. Up until this point, I never really thought the good guys were going to get seriously hurt. It also really marked an end to innocence. Seeing the tiny, Voldemort-faced infant morph into a full grown horror was absolutely terrifying. The power Harry’s blood had to revive Voldemort was fiendish. And even though Harry makes it out alive after the duel with Voldemort, it was a moment where we knew things were definitely going to get worse before they got better.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

A Kiss under the Mistletoe
Harry and Cho share a kiss under the mistletoe. This was Harry’s first kiss, and everyone’s first kiss is a very big deal. Harry’s first kiss was the kiss heard — and debated — around the world.

I Will Not Tell Lies
Mrs. Umbridge might have looked like a nice pink pastry in her prim pink suits, but she was no cream puff. She had a mean streak a mile wide, a demented desire to control Hogwarts, and she definitely had it out for Harry. Case in point: detention with Umbridge was more than just writing lines. It was more like carving them into one’s flesh. Definitely a lesson one wouldn’t be forgetting quickly. It makes the list as one of the most uncomfortable, painful, and I want to get even moments ever.

The Death of Sirius Black
I still remember the pain and shock I felt when Sirius black was killed. Harry and Sirius enjoyed being a family for only a short time before Sirius’ life was taken away. Harry’s pain was so visceral that I felt it. Sirius’ death was so sudden, so unexpected, and so quick. The unfairness of it all left me breathless. Though it isn’t my favorite moment, it is definitely a moment I will never forget.

The Battle Between Dumbledore and Voldemort
If you ever doubted that Albus Dumbledore was a wizard of great and terrible power, it was here that we could lay those doubts to rest. Dumbledore kicks some serious Voldemort butt and coaxes Harry back from the brink. It was absolutely rad to watch Dumbledore make short work of the evil wizard.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009)

Sectumsempra! Harry and Draco Malfoy Duke It Out

Well, we knew a showdown between these to adversaries was well over due. What Malfoy didn’t know was that Harry was armed with the spell book belonging to the Half Blood Prince, who just happens to be Severus Snape. The results are deadly and Draco finds himself on the losing end of Harry’s wand. Thanks goodness for that unbreakable vow Snape had made to keep Malfoy safe.

Dumbledore Drinks the Poison Covering the Horcrux
This was a ghastly scene and not only did it test Harry’s resolve, but it tested my stamina. I was as exhausted and weakened as Dumbledore was. And then, just when you thought you could relax and take a beat, these gross little devils come out of the water. Creeped me out for sure!

The Death of Dumbledore
Here I knew something was going to happen. And though it wasn’t as unexpected, it was no less dramatic, and Dumbledore’s death left us all feeling a little less safe. There was a feeling of desolation and dark foreboding that left us all wondering that without the wise and powerful Dumbledore to lead the way, what was Harry going to do? We could only hope that Harry had learned and listened well, that Dumbledore had something up his sleeves, and that his death was just part of the plan.

There are so many awe inspiring, fantastic, and iconic moments in this collection of films that we could go on forever. Almost every 5 minutes there was something happening in these films to make you go more than hmmm. I’m sure The Deathly Hallows will be no different. There is a moment in every film that has a special place in hearts of fans all over the world. Maybe they are included here, but if they aren’t we’d really like to know. What are your favorite Harry Potter moment so far?
