Ten of the Greatest Working Duos in Film

Roger Deakins & The Coen Brothers

(I know this is a trio, but I’m counting it!) Roger Deakins is not only one of the most famous cinematographers in the history of film, he is also one of the most successful. Likewise, the Coen Brothers are not just one of the most popular director teams in cinema, they have also found a lot of success. So, naturally a lot of their best work of all of these formidable film makers came when they worked together. These films are as well known for the way they tell their stories as the way they look.

Max von Sydow & Ingmar Bergman

Don’t let the lack of awards and nominations convince you that this collaboration was not very fruitful. Of the 4 the films considered to be Bergman’s best, two of them happen to star Max von Sydow, and one features him in a supporting role. Bergman’s style was hugely influential – many of the filmmakers who came to define the New Hollywood era in the late 60’s and 70’s have stated him as a primary influence. And it is through Sydow’s work as an actor that his greatest films became so appreciated in the first place.

Colleen Atwood & Tim Burton

Tim Burton’s unique style doesn’t work on film unless you have a costume designer who can help to bring it to life. Luckily, that’s exactly who Tim Burton found in the accomplished costume designer Colleen Atwood. Although Atwood’s impressive filmography has its share of notable films without Tim Burton, she first started getting attention for her work in Edward Scissorhands. Since then, she has worked on a vast majority of Burton’s films, and they have been nothing short of spectacular in terms of costume design and execution.
