The upcoming RoboCop reboot, that would have worked as a direct sequel to the original franchise, has lost a director.
Well this is a big ‘ol bummer. In the wee hours of the morning, director Neill Blomkamp (Chappie, District 9) announced on Twitter that he was no longer helming MGM’s planned RoboCop reboot/sequel.
Off Robocop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait/ need to shoot Robocop now. Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans. N

This is a bummer for many reasons, not least of which that RoboCop seems perfectly suited for Blomkamp’s style of film. More than that, however, Blomkamp’s enthusiasm for the project has been infectious. On his social media channel, he’s been open about his progress on the film, dropping tidbits of information for eager fans (like the original suit making a return). Seeing his passion had a lot of people excited for the franchise’s next step…
Personally speaking, him leaving RoboCop Returns has killed a BUNCH of my interest in the film. That’s not to say it won’t be good, but it’s definitely a blow to the hype machine. With MGM wanting to move forward quickly, we’ll likely hear about a replacement director before too long.
What do you think of this news? Who do you hope to see come in to direct?
